Crawford County Judicial District
The 11th Judicial District includes Crawford, Cherokee, and Labette counties. Appeals from Kansas district courts generally move to the Kansas Court of Appeals, with possible review by the Kansas Supreme Court. Federal matters from Crawford County are separate and fall within the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas, with the federal boundary page placing Crawford County in the Fort Scott Division. Crawford County Lower Courts
Municipal courts are the documented lower courts in the Crawford County research. Pittsburg Municipal Court is held at the Beard-Shanks Law Enforcement Center and lists Wednesday sessions for trials, hearings, and initial appearances. Girard Municipal Court handles environmental violations, traffic violations, and city ordinance violations, and its page states that no jury trials are conducted. A city traffic ticket may never appear first in District Court because the city court is the proper venue.
When the record involves a citation, read the issuing court name before searching. If the citation names a municipal court, use that city court. If it names District Court or a state-law traffic case routed to the Pittsburg division, use the District Court or Central Payment Center channels. If an appeal or related warrant is involved, call the court that issued the notice before assuming the case moved to another system.
Crawford County District Court History
Crawford County was created in 1867 from the northern half of Cherokee County and named for Governor Samuel J. Crawford. Girard became the county seat in December 1868. The first courthouse was a frame building on the north side of the square, with county officials on the first story and District Court on the second. A later 1889 courthouse was built in Victorian Gothic style, used 850,000 bricks, had four round corner tower rooms, and eventually developed serious structural cracking. By 1918 the southwest tower leaned eight inches out of alignment.
The current courthouse was dedicated June 1, 1922. The official history describes a three-story Carthage stone building with marble interior features. The third floor is devoted to courtrooms, jury rooms, judges' rooms, the Clerk of District Court, and computer room. Renovations in the 1990s replaced the boiler and chiller system, repaired exterior stone, applied sealer, and replaced more than 90 original windows.
